How can I spot a fake discount?

Question the crossed-out price, compare the item elsewhere, and watch for countdown timers and vague savings claims.

Start by doubting the crossed-out price. A discount is only real if the item actually sold at the higher price for a meaningful time. Many do not.

Warning signs

  • Inflated reference price. A list price nobody ever paid.
  • Permanent sale. The same discount banner every time you visit.
  • Countdown pressure. Timers that reset when you reload the page.
  • Vague savings. Up to some percentage off, on items you did not want.
  • Bundle padding. Extras you would never buy, used to inflate the total value.

How to check

  • Look at the price history if you track it, or have tracked it.
  • Compare the identical model number at other sellers.
  • Check the cost per unit, not just the total.
  • Read the returns policy. Final sale changes the maths.

The real question

Ignore the discount for a moment. Would you buy this item at this price if there were no sale? If yes, it may be a good buy. If no, it is not a deal for you.
