A quick five-question check to run before any purchase, so you can tell a genuine deal from clever marketing in about a minute.

Deals are designed to be decided in seconds. A countdown ticks, a banner flashes, a cart fills. This check slows you down just enough. It takes about a minute, works online or in a store, and gets easier every time you use it.

1. Did I want this before I saw the offer?

Be honest. If the sale created the desire, the safest move is to walk away. Items you planned to buy pass this test. Impulse buys usually do not. Keep a wish list so this question has an easy answer.

2. What does it normally cost?

If you have been tracking it, you already know. If not, look at the same item elsewhere and check whether the crossed-out price was ever real. A reference price you cannot find anywhere else is a warning sign. Our guide to spotting fake discounts covers the common tricks.

3. Is it the exact same thing?

Compare model numbers, sizes, versions and what comes in the box. Variants made for one seller, older generations and smaller packs can make a price look lower than it really is.

4. What is the total, really?

Add delivery, fees, accessories you will need, and any subscription you are being signed up for. Check the return policy too. A final-sale item that does not fit is not a bargain.

5. Would I still buy it tomorrow?

Picture the offer gone. Would you pay the normal price, or wait for the next sale? If you would happily pay more tomorrow, buying today is fine. If the answer is no, let it go. Real deals on real needs come round again.

Scoring it

  • Five yes answers: buy with confidence.
  • Three or four: fix the weak spot first, such as comparing elsewhere.
  • Two or fewer: close the tab.

Make it automatic

Run this check every time for a month. Soon you will do it without thinking, and urgency tactics will stop working on you. Pair it with good price-tracking habits and you will know a fair price on sight.
