Is it worth waiting for a sale?

For planned, non-urgent purchases, often yes. For things you need now, or that rarely drop, waiting can cost you more.

For planned purchases you do not need right away, waiting often pays off. For urgent needs, or items whose price rarely moves, waiting can cost you more in time, hassle or a worse substitute.

Good candidates to wait on

  • Items with a predictable new model cycle
  • Seasonal goods bought out of season
  • Big-ticket items you have tracked for a while
  • Anything on your wish list with a target price

Poor candidates

  • Something broken that you rely on every day
  • Essentials that rarely go on sale
  • Items that sell out and come back at higher prices

Count the hidden costs

Waiting has costs too: going without, making do, or buying a cheap stopgap you later replace. Add those up before deciding.

A simple rule

If you have tracked the price and know what a good one looks like, wait for it. If you have no idea, start tracking now and decide in a few weeks.
